What is Pathfinders:

Pathfinders is a youth club sponsored by the Seventh Day Adventist Church, for the purpose of teaching its members skills and values that are often lacking these days. We are similar to the Boy and Girl Scouts in many ways, although we are co-ed. We earn honor patches, go camping, learn to march, and learn valuable life skills. Pathfinders is open to kids ages 10 and older or in the 5th grade.

A special perk for the Howell Mountaineers Pathfinder Club is that we have our own camping area in the woods behind the college. The camping area is called Redwood Flats. Many wonderful memories are formed there for both the kids and the staff. Redwood Flats provides a safe place for the kids to work on their camping skills and nature honors without having to worry about some of the issues that come with using a public campground. It is also an absolutely beautiful place to camp and play.

Pathfinders learn many skills. All of the new Pathfinders are automatically enrolled in our Camp Craft honor class. In this class they learn wilderness safety and conservation, basic camping skills and safety, fire safety and fire building, and camp cookery. The Fall and Spring semester Camp Craft groups combine for a special camp-out during the Spring where the skills they have learned are put to the test. This is often considered a favorite camp-out (I know it is for me).

Schedule:

We meet on Wednesday night between 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM, during the school year.

We also have periodic weekend activities, such as the NCC Camporee. Induction Night, Awards Trip, Bike-A-Thon, various fund-raisers, camp-outs, Camp-In, Etc.

Half of our Wednesday night meetings are Craft nights, where we work on our skills. The other half are Club nights, where we work on drilling and marching, class-work (to advance in the club by learning new things), and the main activity of Club nights…
